Description

The Charminar is a monument and mosque located in Hyderabad, Telangana, India which was constructed in 1591. The monument in itself has become a global icon of Hyderabad which has been listed among the most recognized structures built in India. It has been a historical place. The Mosque on the top floor has been lying for over 400 years. It is also known for its surrounding markets. It is one of the preferred tourist attractions in Hyderabad. Many local festivals such as Ramzaanare celebrated here. The monument is situated on the east bank of Musi river. To the west of the monument, lies the Laad Bazaar, and to the southwest lies the beautiful granite Makkah Masjid. This has been listed as an architectural and archaeological gem on the official "List of Monuments" prepared by the ASI (Archaeological Survey of India). The English name is a combination and translation of the Urdu words Chār and meaner, which combinely translates to "Four Pillars".

History

There is a legend of underground tunnel which connects the Golconda fort to Charminar which was possibly intended as an escape route for the qutubshahi rulers in case of a siege. This itself tells the amount of engineering and mind which had been invested in making this marvelous structure. Initially the monument with its four arches was so much genuinely planned that once the fort was opened one could easily catch a glimpse of the busy and beautiful Hyderabad city, as these Charminar arches were directly facing the most active royal ancestral streets. This also inspires to have a visit at this beautiful place.

  • The whole structure has been built brilliantly. It houses some of the most beautiful sculptures and carvings. The rest is described below: Mosque – A mosque is located near to the western end of the open roof. The remaining part of the roof used to serve as a court during the Qutb Shahi times. The actual mosque sits on the top floor of the four-story structure. Clock – The clock on the minaret has been added in the year 1889. There is a water cistern (Locally called as vazu) in the middle, with a small fountain for ablution before offering prayer. The whole Charminar masjid is itself a magnificent structure with four grand arches that face the fundamental point which finally opens into four different streets.

Bazaars : Bazaars are known for its jewelry most commonly bangles and the PatharGatti, which is known for the pearls in it. The Charminar market had some 14,000 shops. The Bazaars surrounding Charminar were described by Sarojini naiduin her poem "In the Bazaars of Hyderabad" by Sarojini Naidu. Char kaman and Gulzar Houz : Four arches which are located to the North of Charminar are known as Char Kaman. These arches were built along with the Charminar which are the Kali Kaman, Machli Kaman, Seher-e-Batilki Kaman and Charminar Kaman. At the center of these arches there sits a fountain popularly called the Gulzar Houz. The Char Kaman are in need of restoration and protection from enroachments.
